Armenia is a small country in the former Soviet Union and was once part of the Persian empire. It's borders are Turkey, Iran (Persia), Azerbaijan and Georgia. Yerevan is the capital of Armenia. The symbol of Armenia is Mount Ararat. This is the mountain where (from the Bible) Noah's Ark rested after the flood of 40 days and 40 nights.

St. Gregory the Illuminator, converted Armenians to Christianity. In the year 301 A.D., Armenia became the first Christian nation. The Armenian people celebrate Christmas on January 6th. In 405 A.D., the Armenian alphabet was created by St. Mesrob-Mashdots.

Between 1915 and 1923, the Turkish government of the Ottoman Empire began exterminating the Armenian people. Armenians were forced to march in deserts and were starved. During this time, over 1.5 million Armenians were massacred. This became the first Genocide of the 20th century. To this day, Turkey still denies that this ever happened. Each year on April 24th, Armenians around the world gather to remember their lost ancestors. This is known as Armenian Martyrs' Day.
